What started as a 5 a.m. idea to raise money for Hurricane Harvey relief has evolved into a true community-driven effort. Created by Nelstar and Nayelie, Heroes for Harvey is a 72 hour Heroes of the Storm marathon on Twitch featuring 25 broadcasters raising money for the American Red Cross.
“I am actually from the Beaumont/Port Arthur area. I spent 24 years of my life there, that is the area that got hit most recently by Tropical Storm Harvey: approximately 26 inches of rain in 24 hours.” Nelstar said. “I tweeted it out and Nayelie saw it and ran with it. In 3 hours it had turned from this crazy 5 ‘o’clock in the morning idea that I didn’t really think was going to do anything, to 72 hours with a $10,000 goal.”
Since making landfall last Friday night, Hurricane Harvey has caused catastrophic flooding in Texas and Louisiana, displaced tens of thousands and killed at least 38. The storm could be the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history with estimates ranging around 190 billion dollars. “We’ve dealt with our share of hurricanes over the past 50 to 60 years but it’s nothing where one stalls over the city and dumps 9 trillion gallons of water over southeast Texas.” Nelstar added.
The stream schedule and donation link can be found on the Heroes for Harvey Tiltify page: https://tiltify.com/events/heroes-for-harvey. So far, $900 has been raised of the $10,000 goal prior to the marathon beginning. “The support has been overwhelming.” Nelstar continued, “From Twitch, from Blizzard, from the Heroes community. From outside the Heroes community, there are people from the Elder Scrolls Online community that have reached out to help Heroes for Harvey.”
For viewers who cannot support the relief effort financially, Nelstar believes sharing the stream on social media is a helpful alternative. “I think it’s GoFundMe that warns you when you are about to leave a page ‘One share could raise $37’ and it holds true. Get the word out to let people know what we are doing.”
The marathon stream can be viewed on the Heroes for Charity Twitch channel: http://www.twitch.tv/heroesforcharity. The stream begins Friday at 8 PM CDT and will run until Monday at 8 PM PDT.
